why would a truck start by connecting the negative to a spark plug cap when it wasn’t before?

My truck (02′ ford f150) had difficulty turning on this morning, so my dad tried this trick he learned. He connected a voltage tester to the negative from the battery, and the other end to one of the spark plug caps….started right up. Can anyone explain why this worked? I’m assuming he reset something. Also, can this be an electrical problem with my truck?

Chevy Truck won’t start – battery fully charged?

I have an 83 Chevy s-10. Replaced battery last month, started up great. Went to start it today, its dead. No lights, no clicking sound, nothing. Put a battery tester on the battery, it had 12.9 volts but said the alternator voltage was bad. Can the alternator be bad and the battery still be fully charged? Would a bad alternator cause these symptons?

Can I hack an old set of jumper cables to get a new positive battery cable for my truck?

I’ve got a ’97 Checvy S-10 4 banger with a really corroded battery cable. I think this cable is causing the problems I’m having with the thing.

I want to replace it but I don’t want to have the thing die on me on my way to the auto parts store.

I do have a bunch of jumper cables and I figure they are long enough and should be of a heavy enough gauge that they would work well.

Anyone disagree?
