when jumpstarting a car why is it recommended that you ground the negative jumper cable of the car you are trying to jump on your engine instead of plugging it in to the negative terminal is this so electricity stays in the battery and doesn’t just circulate through it?

my battery was dead so i was gonna jump it off. i hooked up the negative cable to the posative post, and the posative cable to the negative post. And my GPZ 750 wont even start now…please help

I have always thought that in order to use jumper cables to start a dead battery for a car, one simply connects the positive terminals of the batteries together, and likewise with the negative terminals. The instructions tell me to connect the negative clamp to the chassis but I do not get good readings or adequate results that way? What is the danger of connecting directly to battery posts? Thanks.
