I read an article that said charging a battery after it is fully depleted will shorten the life. It said to charge batteries when there is still a little bit of energy in it. Is this true and what is the best way to charge lithium-ion batteries??

I was reading this atricle about the iPod Classic and it said it used Lithium-ion polymer battery, and lithium-ion battery. Whats the difference between Lithium-ion Battery and a Lithium-ion Polymer Battery? And which performs better? Sorry, if I have this question in the wrong category.
