If you hook jumper cables up to a dead battery that can’t hold a charge should the cars electronics still work?

My car battery was completely dead, or so I thought, but when my friend and I went to jump start the car nothing happened. The car wouldn’t start and none of the electronics would work either. Do you think it is a problem with the battery or the electronics?

Please only educated answers.
Thanks for the answers. My friends terminals were pretty corroded, and I only left them on for a few minutes. In the past when I had to jump a car they usually started right up, but if it can take 45 min to see anything I probably just didn’t leave them on there long enough. Time for a new battery. Thanks.
