Car battery loses charge overnight, but magically gets it back again…What’s really going on?

I am the opposite of an auto expert, so I have spent the last few hours reading online to find answers to my problem… I think I know the issue, but I am still confused. Here’s the situation with my 1995 Chevrolet Beretta, automatic:

When my car has been sitting for a while (i.e. 24 hours), it takes a while to get it going again. The first time I turn the key, I hear no engine or anything, just a repeated *bzzz bzzz bzzz thump thump thump* that seems to come from within the car (not the engine). Simultaneously, my clock display brightens and dims in perfect timing with the sound. Then I try starting it again, and I’ll hear a single *whrr*, which then stops and the bzzing and thumping resume. Then I try again, and I get a couple whrrs this time. Next time – a few more. After a couple more repetitions, the *whrr* sound leads into the engine *starting* to roar, but it then it peters out and the bzzing/thumping comes back. Finally, after one or two more attempts, the whrr leads into the typical “engine starting” sound, and the car starts up and purrs just perfectly. Now that the car is started, it will work fine for the rest of the day, even if I leave it sit for a few hours.

I’m not sure if the terms are correct, but based on my research, it seems like this is what’s occurring: first the starter won’t get the engine to turn over… after a few attempts the engine finally begins turning over but won’t fire… and a couple more attempts result in the engine finally firing and the car running smoothly for the rest of the day.

It seems to me that it’s a battery nearing the end of its lifespan, but what’s throwing me off is the fact that the engine DOES start after I try it enough times. If the battery was really the culprit, wouldn’t I need some sort of outside help in the form of jumper cables or automatic charger? Can a dying battery really recharge itself simply by turning the key enough times?

One extra note of interest – my time display has stopped keeping accurate time. It doesn’t reset itself, but it keeps falling behind by a couple hours. Seems like another hint toward a battery issue?
